7 Tips For Flight Anxiety/ Nervous Flyers

I recently became aware that the number of people who suffer from flight anxiety is more common than I thought. It makes me sad that people are genuinely fearful of flying and potentially limit their travel to avoid it. As a flight attendant and a very frequent flyer, I am here to share some tips that will hopefully help you feel more comfortable and at ease. Research and statistics show flying is actually one of the safest forms of transportation. Flight crews are well trained and know the in ands outs of the aircraft. Pilots and flight attendants go through rigorous annual recertification training covering medicals, evacuations, safety procedures, and so much more.

I think the first step for those who do suffer from flight anxiety is to recognize and acknowledge your feelings towards flying. Know your feelings are valid. You are not alone. Now let's have the best flying experience together ☺

1. Arrive Early To The Airport

Arrive early to the airport to avoid the unnecessary stress of last minute check-ins, TSA lines, not knowing where the gate is, etc. The airport can be a hectic place especially if you're running late. Arriving early to be in a more calm state of mind and not feel rushed will be a great way to start your trip. You may even have time to use the bathroom, grab some food, look at duty free, etc. You will be ready to board feeling at ease.

2. Advise Your Flight Crew

Tell your flight crew. The flight attendants can check up on you and reassure you if there is turbulence. Turbulence is nothing to worry about, it is merely pockets of air, weather related, basically just the air shifting. Whenever I have a passenger come onboard and they tell me they're a nervous flyer I usually will offer them an alcoholic beverage during service to help them relax a bit ;)

3. Calming Essential Oils

A good calming essential oil can help alleviate and calm your body and mind. There are travel size oils you can bring and smell periodically or rub on your wrist or behind your ears.

4. Bring An Item That Brings You Comfort

Bringing something that makes you feel safe and comforted is a perfect way to remain calm. A boyfriend's sweater, your pets favorite toy, you grandma's necklace, etc.

5. Distraction

Distract yourself by watching an action movie or reading a book. I worked a flight once where the captain made an announcement that we were to expect light turbulence for the first hour of the flight and suggested that the passengers watch an action movie to have a 3D experience. Turbulence doesn't have to be this big scary thing, let's not let our minds get the best of us and create scenarios that would never happen. We are in control, deep breaths..

6. Listen To Peaceful Relaxing Music

Listening to peaceful music during takeoff and landing will help put your mind into a more relaxed state.

7. Be Aware Of Airplane Sounds

Be aware of sounds that are normal during your flight. The planes are loud and powerful and build to carry and withstand so much. The plane will be loud during take off and landing, it is carrying so many people and cargo, taking you safely to your destination.

Remember you are not alone and your feelings are valid. You are in control. Let us create a happier and more relaxed fun flying experience together.

If you have any other tips or have found something that works for you, please leave it below so we can help each other out.

Hope to see you in the friendly skies.
