Airline Family

I remember mid-training, before I earned my wings, looking across a hotel shuttle at a crew sitting together. I couldn’t really picture it just yet. Being long away  from home, who knows where, with just my little suitcase and my crew.  Little did I know, my crew members would immediately become my second family. I have never in my life experienced the amount of loyalty and support that my inflight crew members have given me.

After earning my wings, I remember walking through the airport and seeing other airline crew and nodding in respect. I felt connected in a way. That connection all crew members have. Maybe it’s because we understand the hard process, sacrifices, and dedication it took to get here. I was taught the ropes from those who had been in the industry for years. From working through medicals together inflight, to long layovers, to never ending work trips, or spending holidays and birthdays together or sharing devastating news while being so far away from the comfort of our loved ones, we immediately bond. It’s crazy because sometimes it is your first time meeting, but you have that instant connection. Coworkers have shared their lunch, bought me coffee, defended me, made me tea when I was sick, put essential oils behind my ears when I had motion sickness, got security to escort us when I had a crazy man stalk me on a layover(funny story), I remember one time the captain even offered me oxygen from his oxygen mask and a chocolate because of lady cramps. My flight attendant brothers and sisters always go above and beyond for one another. We always have each other’s back. Whether we need to be covered for something or a guest was rude to one of us, we are a team and stand as one. I am so grateful for my little airline family. There is something special about going to work and knowing everything will be okay, even when you aren’t feeling completely yourself. I know right now things look uncertain, but stay strong. I will be taking a 6 month voluntary furlough come October. I know we will fly even higher come the new year. I look forward to a prosperous flying year with well behaved and grateful passengers.

To all my fellow flight attendants, I thank you. You are appreciated, you are family.

xoxo,
Guadalupe
